Josie's gaze returned to Raphael. "Is it storming?"
"It's always storming somewhere, dear Josie. Ignore that and tell me, why are you here when your daughter is down there with a bullet hole in her shoulder?"
"Yeah, how did she get that bullet hole in her shoulder? I did everything in my power to keep her safe and she ended up shot. Why?"
"Everything happens for a reason."
"What reason could there possibly be for my daughter to get shot?"
"You told D.J. her getting shot would bring her and Christian closer together."
"I had to tell her something or look the incompetent."
"Well, in this case you were right. They will be thrown together into danger. Nothing makes two people learn the truth of their inner feelings like danger."
"Danger. I don't like the sound of that. What if someone gets killed?"
He didn't answer, just continued to stare at her, his eyes bluer than any summer sky she'd ever seen or imagined.
Josie's fear nearly took away her voice. She swallowed against the hot lump in her throat. "Don't tell me they're supposed to die," she said in a hoarse voice. "Since they can't find their way to each other on earth they get to do it up here? Tell me that's not true. I'm the one who failed. Punish me. Not them."
"Heaven doesn't work that way. We do not punish, and we do not make deals. Everyone has their life lessons, as I've told you before. You have learned yours. If D.J. and Christian don't learn theirs, they
